the apple chronicles, volume 3

the rome apple

rome apple

the sticker reads “rome - 4171 - produce of the u.s.a. - “pride of new york” logo”

this is the third apple of the 4 i got at food lion. i have not tried one of these before either. the skin on this one shifts from a light red to a nice deep red. on the top where the stem usually is is a bright green patch. very attractive apple, i must say. it is already rinsed and ready to go, so here goes.

hmmm…crisp skin, more soft inside. it tastes good, but not my favorite. not overly juicy, though, and i like that. my teeth kind of slide through the innards instead of cracking off a chunk like some of the crispier apples. it’s not very sweet, like yesterday’s fuji. i think it is just a bit bland. there doesn’t seem to be any kick to it. i would probably buy more of these if the store i was at was running out of options. maybe this would taste better in an apple cobbler or pie instead of just straight up. for an occasional apple in the park, though, it would be okay. i give this one a 2.5 out of 5 on my awesome apple scale.

next up: the braeburn! (one of my recent favorites)

the apple chronicles, volume 2

the fuji apple

fuji apple

today, i am trying the fuji apple. i have never had one of these before so i am looking forward to it. i got this one at food lion along with the pink lady i tried yesterday. the sticker on the fuji apple reads “lg. #4131 - washington - produce of the u.s.a.”. the color of this one is mostly red with a bit of yellow and green splattered around. it feels pretty firm, but as we saw with the pink lady, this could be deceiving. well, i am off to rinse it and give it a go.

(…rinsing it and giving it a go…)

wow. delicious! when i took my first bite, it felt like the skin popped as my teeth broke through. But the inside, instead of being crunchy like i was expecting, is surprisingly, well uncrunchy, i guess. it is insanely sweet and juicy as all get-out. i have to keep wiping my hands because the juice is running down my fingers. what a messy son-of-a-gun i am! i just took a bite and juice from the apple literally flew away from my face! so, the fuji apple gets a 4.0 on the awesome apple scale. i would rate it higher, but as i am finishing it, my throat is feeling a little, i don’t know, weird, i guess. i think it is safe to say that this apple is a bit too sweet, although i am sure i will buy more of these.

the apple chronicles, volume 1

the pink lady

the pink lady

i was at food lion last night, checking out the fruit, and saw they had quite a few types of apples. i got one of each of 4 different kind (the cashier and bagger were looking at me weird, so i struck up a conversation about how i am on a quest to find the most delicious apples - they thought i was lame). the first type that i am trying is the ‘cripp’s pink’ pink lady apple. the sticker on the apple says it is grown in the u.s.a. it had a nice pink hue to it, nearing red, and some green around the top and bottom. the apple felt like it would be a bit soft. i am not a huge fan of soft apples, so i was thinking this one would not be too good.

when i bit into the apple, though, it was very crisp and sweet, and a bit tart. in other words, it was freakin’ delicious. i give this one a 4.5 out of 5 on my awesome apple scale. i will definitely be purchasing more of these. stay tuned for my next taste test, which will be either the fuji, braeburn, or rome apple (all three are waiting in my fruit bowl on my desk). yum.
